Are you an entrepreneur and you have reached some sort of plateau? Maybe you have been trying to get your business off the ground, but nothing seems to be happening. Well, I have been in that same exact space. I used to wonder if perhaps I wasn’t meant to have my own business or if my services just weren’t good enough. The truth is, I am very good at what I do. I love what I do. I make a difference in people’s lives even if it isn’t thousands of people at once. People are being reached. Odds are, if you’re passionate about your business, you are probably good at it too. There are just some key mistakes beginner entrepreneurs tend to make that prevents them from growing their business.
In today’s blog post, we’re going to get into 10 reasons why your business isn’t growing.
Reasons Your Business Isn’t Growing
- You don’t have a target audience. When I first started my business, I would have taken anyone as a client. It didn’t matter who they were. I didn’t know what kind of client I was looking for. However, if you don’t know who you help, you won’t help anyone. In order to properly market yourself, you have to know who you’re marketing to. You have to know who you’re looking for. Once I figured out who my target audience was, I will admit that I ended up turning some clients down because they were not a good fit. While that may not sound appealing to you, the truth is that no product or service is for everyone and in order to get the best results you need to service those who benefit the most from what you have to offer. So, figure out who your target audience is, or you’ll find that you don’t have an audience at all.
- You’re not setting goals for your business or planning how you’re going to achieve those goals. You should constantly be working towards something specific in your business. You can’t just say “I want to make a million dollars” and think that that’s your goal and all you need to do. If you are just starting your business, your first goal will probably be to get one client. However, even that isn’t enough. You need to be researching and setting up a plan on HOW you plan to get that client. How do you intend on getting your target client’s attention? What are you going to do each day this week to bring you closer to your goal? What small goals could you start with before that goal? One thing I do is have goals for how many client leads I get each week. When I reach even the smallest goal, I know that something I am doing is right and I am headed in the right direction. Without goals, you are just aimlessly running around just doing random things that isn’t taking you anywhere.
- You’re not learning anything. I don’t care if you have a PhD in business or in your field, you NEVER stop having things you could be learning. There is always a way to better yourself either in your craft that your servicing, in your marketing tactics, or your self development. You should be constantly be trying to learn more and educate yourself on more things and new ways to better what you do and how your business runs. I am constantly looking for new ways to help my clients grow their social media. I am constantly looking for ways to grow this blog. I am ALWAYS looking for ways to better my YouTube channel. it doesn’t matter how much success I receive in anything that I strive for, I know that I can always better myself somehow. Without that attitude in mind, people who are constantly learning are going to surpass you and you will find yourself unable to compete because you weren’t keeping yourself ahead of the game.
- You’re not investing in digital marketing. EVERYBODY is online these days. If you are not delving into the online market for your business you are missing a potential audience of over a billion people. In fact, statistics state that over billion people are using social media worldwide. THREE BILLION PEOPLE! This may be sad but it is a fact that our generation is becoming less and less face to face and more and more digital. So, why would you ignore the endless possibilities to reach new people online?
- You’re not using Pinterest. This is a very recent lesson that I have learned. I am not going to lie, I was one of the last bloggers in the world to jump on the Pinterest train. I was never a fan of Pinterest before starting my blog and had no interest in it afterwards. I grew at a pretty okay pace without it so I didn’t think it was necessary to have one, but LEMME TELL YOU! Pinterest blasts your online traffic by a TON if you know what you’re doing. I tried it at first and it didn’t do me much good, but then I took this AMAZING *Pinterest E-course* created by this amazing girl boss Ell Duclos that broke down Pinterest for me step by step and implementing what I learned made a HUGE difference in my blogging career as well as clicks to my website for my services! There are millions of people on Pinterest regularly and a great deal of people say they look on Pinterest before thinking of making any major purchases. Don’t you want to be a part of what these people see when they are thinking about spending their money?
- You won’t outsource. If you’re a control freak like me, this one may be a tough pill to swallow. I won’t lie, I have a VERY hard time letting other people anywhere near my business. Why? Well, this blog and my social media business is my baby. It is something I started myself through a lot of hard work and I never felt like anyone else would do it the way I wanted it done. However, I am not an expert in everything. And to be even more transparent, I am not that great at everything. One of the biggest ways to overwork yourself and end up tapping out or not giving your best to the part of your business you’re passionate about is trying to wear a million hats by yourself. It is okay to get a virtual or personal assistant. It is okay to get someone to create graphics for you. I have had many clients who have told me that they are RELIEVED they decided to get someone like me to help them with social media because they were drowning in it beforehand. If you cannot invest in your business, you will find yourself not growing.
- Your letting motivation decide when you’re going to work on your business. Let me burst this bubble for you: you’re not always going to feel like working on your business. There are LOTS of days where I don’t feel like social media scheduling. There are days when I have no actual desire to email clients. But in order to have a successful business, you need more than just motivation. You need discipline. Motivation is great and it is something we strive to have, but it will not always be around and you have to have grit and determination when motivation is taking a vacation. There are LOTS of times I didn’t feel like recording videos for my YouTube channel, but I did it anyway because even though it is not yet monetized, it is my business and I have to treat it as such and I have to get working even when I am feeling lazy. The thing about this is, that when I do start recording, I find myself not wanting to stop. So sometimes it’s forcing yourself to start working even when you’re not wanting to that actually brings on motivation.
- Poor money management. You need to know where your money is going at all times. Do not spend money frivolously. Keep up with where the money from your business is going and how it is being invested. People who spend money poorly end up in debt and struggling to keep their business afloat.
- Not automating. I don’t know how people blog or run their businesses without automating anything. I wouldn’t be able to do it. I could NOT manually get on Twitter every morning and tweet. If I wasn’t able to schedule all of my blog posts, email send outs, and more I would probably lose my mind. It is too much to keep up with. ANYTHING that you can automate, DO IT. Take the load off of yourself. It saves you so much time and that time can be invested in things that can help majorly grow your business. Automation is a beautiful invention that helps boost productivity by a LOT.
- You don’t believe in yourself or your business. Your thoughts are POWERFUL. If you do not think that you will succeed, then you won’t. You’re right, regardless. You may not even realize that you are giving off the energy that you don’t believe in yourself or your product. If you are constantly giving discounts and downing your prices, then you clearly don’t believe you’re worth your original price. When I first started my social media business, I was ALWAYS giving discounts. My very first client paid HALF the original price and you know what? She was the worst client I ever had and the worst experience. Stick to YOUR price. Know your worth and never let anyone tell you that you are charging too much just because they can’t afford it. That is one of the hardest lessons I had to learn.
If you really want your business to succeed, you have to follow the right steps. I am not nearly as far as I want to be in my business, but following these steps has taken me further, faster than I ever imagined. I have come so far from where I once was because I stopped wasting time and energy and THOUGHTS on things that don’t benefit me and my business.
