Are you doing what you love?

In my personal opinion, success is getting to wake up every morning and do something that you love doing. To have your career perfectly collide with your passion. I believe that no matter what it is that you’re passionate about, you can turn your passion into your job somehow. It may not be conventional, but it’s always worth it once you’ve done it. I have seen people happily making a living doing things like whistling or tap dancing. You just have to find the right way to do it for you.

I’m one of the lucky ones. I Love doing what I do. I love this blog. I love working online and helping other people build their social media for their business or website. I enjoy doing these things. Not everyone is so lucky. How do you even know that you love what you do? You may not even realize that you’re sitting at a job that you tolerate, but you don’t love it. Or maybe you’re in love with what you do and don’t realize it because you always thought you’d be doing something else. That is the position I can definitely say that I’m in. I love what I do, but I didn’t always realize it because I always thought I’d end up in child care. I still babysit from time to time but that’s not what I ended up being meant to do.

So let’s find out how we know that we’re actually doing something we love.

How do you know you love what you do?

  1. Time goes by quickly when you’re at work. This may not be an every day occurrence. I do have days that seem to drag on because I’m feeling lazy and I don’t feel like doing anything. But when you love what you do you’ll find yourself looking up and the day will be almost over because you were lost in the sauce. I’ve spent hours working on blog posts and YouTube videos and been shocked at how much time has gone by. Loving what you do makes it easy to lose track of time. Time flies when you’re having fun, right?
  2. You talk about work fondly outside of work. I find myself bragging on my supporters (you guys) all of the time. I love you guys. I’ll be having a conversation and end up talking about my blog, YouTube, or social media business. Now, in lots of jobs we find ourselves complaining about our bosses or our clients, but there’s a difference in what you choose to focus on when you love what you do. You may spend five minutes talking about how your boss is annoying and then go on for an hour about a project you’re doing and how excited you are to get finished with it. When you spend more time focusing on the good than then bad, it shows. No matter who I’m talking to, I’m always being told that I light up when I talk about my work.
  3. You rarely call in sick unless… you’re REALLY sick. When I did work with children at a daycare center, I would have to be contagious and unable to get out of my bed to call in sick and not go to work. Why? I loved going to work. I would get excited about things that I was supposed to be doing that day and I couldn’t just NOT go and miss out. If you get disappointed because you couldn’t go to work, you definitely love what you do. You’ll find it hard to just stay home and rest because you’re so excited about the project you’re working on. Luckily, I work from home. So if I’m sick, I can still do SOME work and not have to worry about getting anyone else sick. I still struggle to take time away and rest when I’m sick because I’m always WANTING to do my job.
  4. You don’t struggle to focus. I have the attention span of a squirrel. This is not something I’m proud of, but it’s true. I have always had issues being able to focus on one thing. When I’m writing a blog post, however, or editing a YouTube video, I end up in my zone. I’m so focused that almost nothing can distract me. When I was writing the outline for this very blog post, my boyfriend had to come into the room and tell me to come eat dinner and I didn’t even realize that I had been working an hour after I had planned. I get lost in the sauce all of the time and if you love what you do, then you do also.
  5. You feel accomplished after completing a project. Getting this blog website launched was HARD. I struggled to get it off the ground and every time I thought I was close, SOMETHING set me back. I wanted to cry at times and wanted to even give up, but I didn’t. When it was launched and the first blog went up and you guys showed me the love that you ALWAYS show, I was on cloud 9. I was so excited to be back and I felt as if I had won the lottery. Every time I finish editing a video (and my video editing skills are not that impressive btw) I feel so happy to have done my best. When you love what you do, finishing something you put your all into makes you excited. When you don’t love what you do, you’re just glad it’s over but the finished product is not something you linger on.

So do you love what you do? When I started managing social media accounts, I didn’t expect to love it. I just knew that I was good at it and was doing it for some friends for free anyway. Now, as I continue to learn and get even better at it, I’m so in love with it that I wouldn’t want to do anything else. Sometimes we go into our jobs thinking it’s just a job for us to do at the moment, but life is weird in the way that you end up falling in love with the job.

This isn’t the case for everyone and you may have looked at this list and realized the job you thought you always wanted, you don’t love doing at all. If that’s the case, maybe it’s time to start looking at what excites you and go from there.

Do what you love and love what you do. That is a key part of being successful. Are you there yet? Comment down below your thoughts and if you feel like there’s any other things you’d do if you love your work!
